Special Service Projects Carried For Period Dec 2010 to Nov 2011

 
 

1. Flood Relief

 During the later part of last year and early part of this year, the Northern and Eastern Zone experienced heavy rain which caused flooding in many areas. The following service activities were carried out in some of the affected areas.

Mullaitivu District - Many villages in Mullaitivu district went under water due to heavy rain during the first and second week of December 2010. Following a request received from the the Government Agent of Mullaitivu relief pack for 150 families of Manvalasingam Village who were in temporary camps housed in schools were distributed on December 12, 2010. Each relief pack contained Bed Sheet, Mosquito Net, Towel, Sarong for Men and House Coat for Women, Children Clothing, Soap, Milk Powder, Samaposha, Umbrella and Rubber Slippers.

Batticalo District - Most of Batticaloa district went under water after heavy rains during the second week of January 2011. Most people were housed in schools for several days due to flooding. There was a shortage of food and drinking water. Sevadals from the Northern and Western Region of Sri Lanka got together and distributed dry rations for 1,250 families on January 15, 2011. Each family pack contained Rice, Dhal, Soya Meat, Potato, Curry Powder, Chilli Powder, Tamarind, Salt, Tea, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Mosquito Coil Pack, Panadol, Sanitary Towels, Sidhalape and Drinking Water.

Pollanaruwa District - Many parts of Pollanaruwa district also went under water due to heavy rains during the second week of January 2011. Most people were housed in schools and temples for several days due to flooding. There was a shortage of food and drinking water. Sevadals from the Northern and Western Region of Sri Lanka got together and distributed dry rations for 800 families on January 15, 2011. Each family pack contained Rice, Dhal, Soya Meat, Potato, Curry Powder, Chilli Powder, Tamarind, Salt, Tea, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Mosquito Coil Pack, Panadol, Sidhalape and Drinking Water.

Kantale District - Many parts of Kantale district also went under water due to heavy rains during the second week of January 2011. Most people were housed in schools and temples for several days due to flooding. There was a shortage of food and drinking water. The area Army Commander requested the Sai Organization for assistance. Sevadals from the Northern and Western Region of Sri Lanka got together and distributed dry rations for 2,000 families on January 22, 2011 in Echchilampattu and Virugal areas with the help of the Army. Each family pack contained Rice, Dhal, Soya Meat, Potato, Curry Powder, Chilli Powder, Tamarind, Salt, Tea, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Mosquito Coil Pack, Panadol, Sanitary Towels, Sidhalape and Drinking Water.

Trincomalee District - Many parts of Trincomalee district also went under water due to heavy rains during the second week of January 2011. Most people were housed in schools and temples for several days due to flooding. There was a shortage of food and drinking water. Dry rations were distributed to 1,000 affected families. Each family pack contained Rice, Dhal, Curry Powder, Chilli Powder, Tamarind, Salt, Tea, Sugar and Drinking Water.

 2. Special Narayana Seva for Eshwaramba Day - May 6, 2011

 Special Narayana Seva was Organized by the Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization of Sri Lanka in all five Regions of the Country on Eshwaramma Day May 6, 2011. Lunch was prepared in Sai Samithis/Centers around the Island involving Mahilas, Sevadals & Youth. Over 3,026 lunch parcels were made and distributed to selected Children Homes, Elders Homes, Refugee Camps, Cancer Hospital, Blind School, Blind Colony & Vilages accross all Regions of the Country. Across the Island, 29 Samithis/Centers participated in this service activity.

 3. Mobile Medical Camp - Mullaitivu

 DETAILS PLACES VISITED-

1.      K/ Visuvamadu Vithialaya Camp – This area is newly resettled village. Population is 7,000. This village is about 35 km away from Kilnochchi town.  This village does not have proper infrastructure for health facilities.

2.      M/ Chemmalai Vithiyalayam – This village is situated 30 km away from the Mullaitheevu town. This is also resettled village but fairly stable. The total population is about 3,900. 

3.      Alambil & Naayaru –these are newly resettled villages after the civil war. All the people are accommodated in the transit tents. The total population is about 2,100. Most of them are from the fishing community.

 The Mobile Medical camps in the above places were conducted with the help of the Army, local medical authorities and the Government Agent. 14 Doctors, 4 Pharmacist and 5 Sevadals participated. Screening for Cataract was also done and 32 persons were identified to undergo Cataract Surgery. Dental check up was also carried.

 DETAILS OF THE CAMP CONDUCTED-

 Katharagam Temple Festival is one of the ancient festivals of Sri Lanka celebrated by all community. For this festival, devotees across the island come from their home towns from different regions. Daily around 150,000 devotees come to the temple to worship Lord Muruga during these 15 festival days.

 On the request made by the temple authorities a two day mobile medical camp was conducted in the temple premises. 4 Doctors, 1 Pharmacist and 3 Sevadals participated.

 5. Mobile Medical Camp - Happuthale & Badulla

 DETAILS OF VISITED AREAS-

 1.      Bio Estate, Etalgastana, Badulla – This is a cluster of estates, containing seven division with the population of about 5,000 people. After, the government had taken over these estates; there was a poor medical support to these people. These people have to travel about 24 km to get medical care at Haputalle Hospital.

2.      Elders’ home – this elder’s home is situated 12 km away from the Haputalle town. There are 35 inmates who have been abandoned by the current society.

3.      Adampitiya Buddhist Temple – this Adampitiya village comprises about 4 divisions of estates. Current population is about 3,700.    

The Mobile Medical camps in the above places were conducted with the help of the Tea Estate authorities and Chief Priest of the Adampitiya Buddhist temple. 8 Doctors, 3 Pharmacist and 4 Sevadals participated. Screening for Cataract was also done.

 6. Blood Donation

Blood Donation Camp was held in all Samithis and Centers around the Island on Sep 15, 2011. Over 150 persons donated blood.

 7. Special Narayana Seva - Oct 2, 2011 & Oct 11, 2011

 A special Narayana Seva was conducted at the Allan Mathiyamaya Temple in Kirrulapone, Colombo. Lunch was cooked at the Sai Mandir, Colombo and served at the temple. Over 600 persons living in slump areas around Colombo were served lunch. Over 50 sevadals both male, feamle including youths participated.

 A special Narayana Seva was conducted at the Hospital for the Mentally Handicapped in Angoda on October 11, 2011. Sevadals with the assistance of the cooks at the hospital cooked lunch for 930 inmates. Around 15 sevadals participated.

 

8. Mobile Medical Camp - Eastern Zone

 DETAILS OF PLACES VISITED-

 1.      Arasaditheewu is village 38 km away from the Batticola town. This is a resettled village comprising 14 small villages. Population of this village is about 10,000. These people need to travel at least 15 km to seek medical assistance.

2.      Wavunatheevu is the resettled villages about 13 km away from the Batticoloa town. These villages mainly comprise the reselted populations and their main occupation is farming.

 The Mobile Medical camps in the above places were conducted with the help of the Government Agent and local medical authorities. 12 Doctors, 3 Pharmacist and 5 Sevadals participated. Screening for Cataract was also done and about 53 have been identified to undergo Cataract surgery. 350 reading glasses were also issued.

 9. Special Narayana Seva to Mark Swamy's Declaration of Avatar

A special Narayanaseva was conducted on October 23, 2011 to mark Swamy's declaration of Avatar. Around 500 persons living in slump areas in and around Colombo were served lunch at a temple in Dematagoda. Lunch was cooked at the Sai Mandir and served at the temple. Over 30 sevadals participated.

 10. Mobile Medical Camp - Mahadeva Ashram, Killinochchi

 Date – 6th November 2011.

DETAILS OF STATION VISITED-

 1.      Mahadeva Ashram is a volunteer organization, accommodating and catering about 290 children (boys and girls) who lost their father, mother or both because of the civil war. It is situated 6 km away from the Kilinochchi town.

 The Mobile Medical camp in the above place was conducted with the help of the Government Agent. 4 Doctors, 1 Pharmacist and 5 Sevadals participated. Following a request made by the Children home authorities, umbrellas for 150 children was also distributed.

 11. Cataract Surgeries

 A total of 360 Cataract surgeries have been carried during the year at Vavuniya General Hospital and Kandy General Hospital. These surgeries were carried out after carefully screening for cataract at Medical camps conducted by the Sai Organization. Persons identied to have Cataract were transported to either Vavuniya or Kandy General Hospital and Surgeries were carried out at these two hospitals. 332 Surgeries were carried out at Vavuniya General Hospital and 28 have been carried out at Kandy General hospital by our Doctors. The lense and relevant medicine was provided by the Sai Organization.

 12. Nutrition Project - Kataragama

 Breakfast is provided to 130 children from under privileged families in and around Kataragama on every Saturday. This project was initiated in October this year following a request made by local Government authorities. 5 to 7 Sevadals go to Kataragama every Saturday and cook either Milk Rice or Green Gram or Chick Peas. This is served to around 130 children along with a cup of Milo milk.
